wife of a manual labourer living in tented accomodation besides the delhi to jaipur highway. the ladies would remain in the camp, looking after the children, washing clothes etc whilst the men looked for employment in the surrounding area.
i am not sure what they were talking about but they never stopped. The photograph doesnt show it but they all had the most marvelous smiles with teeth whiter than american actors. i was told that the ladies brushed their teeth with the ashes of the cow dung used to fuel their cooking.

Soni is 15 years of age and has been tightrope walking since she was 5. She is deaf and dumb. She is looked after by her brother and his wife.
She performs daily around Jaipur City and its surrounds.
This camp was rather big with about 20 tents. The travellers had moved to near Samode from the desert part of Rajasthan. they arrived on tractors with the attached trailers holding the ladies and goods. the site had access to a water pump. the men would seek work and of course their arrival would generate interest from people looking for general labour.

all the people i photographed at this labour camp held very strict faces…… apart from this lady who couldn’t stop smiling and laughing. I managed to get her to sit on one of the camps tractors and she just burst out in a fit of giggles.
A large number of rajasthani women will veil their face although they are hindu not muslim. This custom has been followed since the Mughal period. Some ladies are happy to lift the veil for a photograph if you ask, but not all.
